Pakistan has reached a major milestone in medical science by successfully performing its first-ever international tele-robotic surgery. This breakthrough marks a new era for advanced healthcare in the country and highlights Pakistan’s growing capabilities in modern medical technology.
The historic procedure was carried out at Lyari General Hospital in Karachi, where a female patient underwent a gynecological surgery using cutting-edge robotic systems. What made this operation remarkable was that the surgeons were physically located in Kuwait, operating from a distance of nearly 1,600 kilometres.
How the Tele-Robotic Surgery Was Performed
The surgery was completed using advanced tele-surgery technology that allows doctors to control robotic surgical instruments remotely. A high-speed internet connection of 30 Mbps was used during the procedure, ensuring smooth communication between the surgeons and the robotic system.
The response time between the surgeon’s command and the robot’s movement was recorded at just 30 microseconds, which is crucial for maintaining precision, accuracy, and patient safety. This extremely low delay proved that remote surgeries can be performed safely when supported by reliable infrastructure and modern equipment.
Collaboration Between Pakistan and Kuwait Doctors
The operation was a joint effort between doctors in Karachi and international surgeons based in Kuwait. While the foreign surgeons performed the procedure remotely, local medical professionals assisted on-site, ensuring continuous monitoring of the patient.
International surgeons also provided real-time guidance and supervision, making the operation a successful example of global medical collaboration. This achievement opens new possibilities for cross-border healthcare support, especially in complex surgical cases.
Inauguration of Modern Facilities at Lyari General Hospital
The milestone surgery took place during a ceremony at Lyari General Hospital, attended by Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho. She officially inaugurated several modern medical facilities at the hospital, further strengthening its role as a major public healthcare center.
Newly introduced facilities include:
- A fully functional mortuary
- A dedicated forensic section
- Advanced laboratories for microbiology, biochemistry, and pathology
- A special training laboratory for medical students
The training lab allows students to gain hands-on experience using medical mannequins, improving practical skills before working with real patients.
Benefits of Robotic Surgery Technology
Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho explained that robotic surgery is less invasive compared to traditional surgical methods. Instead of large incisions, surgeons use small openings, through which cameras and surgical instruments are inserted.
