Karachi Faces Severe Water Shortage Again as Power Outages Halt Pumping Operations. Karachi is once again experiencing a major water shortage, as recurring electricity failures by K-Electric continue to disrupt the city’s pumping and distribution network. The situation worsened on Friday after a series of power breakdowns crippled the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation’s (KWSC) operations.
Major Breakdown Hits K-3 Pumping Station
According to KWSC, a significant power failure struck the K-3 pumping station late Thursday night. The issue remained unresolved for several hours, causing a substantial drop in water supply across the city.
Officials confirmed that this was not the first disruption of the week. Earlier, the same station suffered a major outage that lasted 41 hours before electricity was finally restored. However, only a few hours later, another cable fault shut the system down again.
Technical Repairs Fail to Solve the Issue
The K-3 station had already been closed on Monday for essential technical repairs. Despite this scheduled maintenance, faults continued to occur, preventing the system from returning to normal operations.
KWSC estimates that the repeated breakdowns have resulted in a loss of around 335 million gallons of water, putting immense pressure on Karachi’s already fragile water supply system.
Areas Worst Affected by the Water Shortage
The ongoing disruptions have severely impacted several residential and commercial zones. The most affected areas include:
- North Nazimabad
- Gulberg Town
- Gulistan-e-Johar
- Scheme 33
- Multiple blocks of Gulshan-e-Iqbal
- New Karachi
- Saddar
- Clifton
Residents in these localities are experiencing low pressure, delayed water supply, or complete outages.
Power Outages Continue to Challenge Karachi’s Water Network
The repeated power failures at major pumping stations highlight ongoing coordination issues between K-Electric and KWSC. As Karachi’s population continues to grow, any disruption in power directly affects water distribution—leading to city-wide shortages.
Conclusion
Karachi’s latest water crisis shows how vulnerable the city’s supply system is to repeated power failures and technical faults. Until long-term solutions and better coordination between KWSC and K-Electric are ensured, residents will continue facing recurring shortages and unstable water distribution.
